I spend a lot of time in oncology clinic waiting rooms. I have this one fantasy that cancer is cured and the plants that they use to make chemotherapy drugs sprout out from the toxic liquids in an abandoned waiting room. This is a pacific yew tree growing out of the drug Taxol.

For the nerdy: It’s a motor with spur gears on a 12″ rod between two pillow blocks. The motor is controlled by an arduino that tells it to run 10 seconds and not run 40 seconds.

Visual Piano Cube in Cellular Hallway, 48″x40″ acrylic and electrical components on and in panel, 2011

This is a painting with three knobs on a piano cube. When you turn the knobs the lights change color. I wanted to make a painting that a viewer could change.

Nerdnote: Here is the back. As you can see…quite a bird’s nest of wires. I used an Atmega 328 with Arduino bootloader to control 9 TIP120s..each resistor controlling 5 LEDs . The LEDs are super bright and use 12v of power. I had to get massive 3W resistors. The resistors get pretty hot and you can feel it on the front of the painting. I like that idea of a painting getting warm.

Cellular Triad 48″x48″, acrylic and electrical components on panel, 2011

This is a cell that plays a harmonic triad based on the 528hz tone which is a frequency for healing as well as, supposedly, DNA repair:

The gizmo that I built for this took a bit more work. It presses the buttons to get the video going and plays the tones. I used three atmega328s, 6 relays connecting to the buttons on the digital photo frames and (stupidly) three voltage regulators (probably could have done it with just one).

Each of these machines plays a tone through the headphones that serves a supposed healing function. There is a meditation pillow in front of them so you can sit down to interact, like this:

The inside has the motor, video frame, and a little machine I built to trigger the buttons on the video frame to get the video going.

You can listen to the sound of the video in the brick wall. It’s a computer reading a computer program. (and failing):

I built a little machine to press all the buttons on the video screens so that the video starts up right away. I used an atmega328 with the arduino bootloader on it. It’s just triggering little 5v relays.

WIZARD JUICE!!!!
Make full screen and turn up the sound for best effect.

The bearded wizard is Nick Ruest who was in town for the weekend and the dancing wizard is Gabe Merkin who was helping me out around the studio earlier in the year. He painted the pants himself and made the outfit.

This video took me forever to edit. It’s only two minutes long but I’ve been working on it since the 2nd of June like 8 hours every day. I chopped it up in Premiere, did most of the effects in After Effects. The 3d stuff is with Maya and some Processing. The music I made mostly with AudioMulch.

The things on the sides of the painting are these little gizmos I made. They are very hard to document. Basically it’s a box on stilts with a 1000 RPM motor inside spinning around a bent rod which I painted with neon colors and there’s a strobe light shining on the spinning rod making it look kind of like a hologram or something.

Here are some pics of the gizmo and that’s what the inside looks like. The hole has epoxy poured in it.
